Why go Off The Market

The idea of creating a Market Independent Life is not a new lifestyle but it is an old one.  It wasn’t that long ago that for those few things you could not grow, store, or do yourself you would go to the locally owned store/shop and purchase what you need. The need for flour, animal feed, grains…requires a trip to the Seed and Feed.  Need fabric? Stop by the Mercantile…oh and pick up some of Mrs. Stewart’s beeswax candles while you are there.  You get the idea.  Imagine that life for a moment, where you buy only what you need.  What you need.

Today we live in a world where we are, with reckless abandon, repeatedly stimulated to buy what we are told we want.  The really sad thing is that there are millions of people who will never jump off the wagon and stop wanting.  They will overdose on the consumerism illusion that they are somehow complete now that they own that second house on the lake, drive that new car, or possess the latest iPhone to hit the market.  The job of brainwashing us has been going on for a long time now and is working wonderfully.  Perfectly in fact.

Getting off the market is a power move in a world that leaves most of us feeling powerless.  Powerless to the corporations, the government, the media, and most importantly powerless to change anything.  Will growing your own veggies or buying them from local farmers change the foreign policy of this nation?  No. It won’t.  At least not to start out with.  I am compelled here to insert a textual nod to the Butterfly Effect.  Not the movie, the theory.  According to thefreedictionary.com the general idea is as follows…

The idea, used in chaos theory, that a very small difference in the initial state of a physical system can make a significant difference to the state at some later time.

Let that soak in a moment.  In this immediate result, instant gratification and me me now now society we live in getting OTM will not change anything…now.  Let us take a moment to run through what happens when we just continue on our consumer driven path towards economic slavery.

I am not a fan of Nestle.  For many reasons, of which you could choose to research yourself, I choose not to buy from Nestle Company.  Your lack of financial subordination to this company is just a speck of sand…they own the beach.  There is no immediate change.  The CEO doesn’t call me begging me to buy another bag of Tollhouse Cookies to save the company!  Just a small wing and an insignificant wisp of air.

Now, since I am engaged in my world and the enlightenment of my fellow beings I go over to a friend’s house and she is feeding her kids Fudge Strips and milk…so that they have something to put on their stomachs before taking their ADD medications.  I say…’Hey…did you know Nestle Co is directly involved with xyz?’ You have opened a narrative that will hopefully make your friend think seriously about the decisions she is making.

We don’t talk about stuff like this enough.  We don’t challenge the people around us, question each other, and discuss concerns about the world.  You mention things like ‘Did you know that Nestle Company, the worlds #1 food company in sales, has been buying up land or acquiring leases across the United States in order to suck up the water and transporting it to huge bottling factories.  From there it comes to you at the low low price of 1.99 for 16oz.  It isn’t just in America that this is happening.  They have a factory in Pakistan as well…the effects on the local groundwater which nearby villages rely upon is staggering.

Sweet Lilly

My friend Mary is bravely raising her granddaughter Lilly.  I can not imagine being in that mode at this point in my life, thankfully I have not been faced with that situation and only hope I could do it as gracefully as Mary has.  One of the things I respect most about Mary is that she is choosing to raise her granddaughter in a  healthy/natural way.  Which brings us to this mornings Barefoot Doctor moment when I made her this years’ tin of Lilly’s Chest and Foot Rub for this years flu season for her grandma’s medicine kit. Essential oils for the wee ones is a matter of concern and should be diluted to a 1.5 – 3% strength for topical administration.  I have done research on the subject of safety of essential oils and came to the conclusion that there will never be a conclusive black or white answer.  Anecdotal information is not always dismissed by me, particularly when it occurs repeatedly and reported by a wide variety of people. This being said I feel the use of essential oils as an addition to the logical ‘remedies’ (ie broth, rest, hydration, vitamin C…) can greatly benefit the recovery of the common cold and flu.  Lilly’s Chest and Foot Rub along with some essential oil to use in her humidifier and a licorice stick, to chew and suck on, were sent home with Mary to help the lil one fight the bug.

Headache Oil Trial

Maria just informed me that she wanted to drive nails through her ears because her head hurt so bad.  This, being a bit messier than I am willing to clean up after right now, led me to investigate which of my Essential Oils could be  used to help her alleviate her headache sans bloodshed.  Whipping out my cauldron I quickly created a small brown glass jar with a mixture for her to add to her temples, forehead, and back of her neck.  As any good scientist (thinking of Walter on Fringe) I felt compelled to try it myself.  Refreshing feeling and easy on the olfactory organ.  Eager to see if it worked.  Stay tuned!

Headache Relief Take 1

2 gtts Myrrh

4 gtts Eucalyptus

6 gtts Peppermint

15 gtts Apricot Oil (no particular reason, just the carrier oil closest to me at the moment)

Place all in a small bowl or glass jar and massage a small amount on the temples, across the forehead and across the back of the neck at the hairline.  Reapply hourly for a few hours until headache (hopefully) retreats.

Arnica Salve for Jen

Making one of my favorite co-workers some Arnica Salve for her arthritic knee and elbow.  She has been using this for a couple years and I always enjoy hearing about how much it has helped her.  A long career as a Nurses Aid has left her like most of us in the medical field…tired and broken down.  Infused in grape seed oil, which is light and absorbs readily, this infusion is then mixed with beeswax to thicken, a spot of Frankensense Essential Oil to help with pain, a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil to help with relaxation and lastly some Rosemary Essential Oil to promote blood flow and increase absorption into the body.

Frunstration (Frustration and fun)

I am sitting at the computer at 3 am trying to figure out the very basics of web hosting in the new world of web hosting.  I have to say it seemed to be easier to do what I wanted when it was a matter of writing script.  I am sure that is simply because I am not familiar with the newer ways, but never the less it is frunstrating.  I like the challenge but would really like to get it down so that it is just a matter of adding content…Fun with no frustration!
